Mostly I type in random names like "[name].dreamwidth.org" to see if it's purged or not. Or, I look at the members list of communities that would attract lots of members like books or history and see if there are any purged accounts still in there. Sometimes, I click on interesting usernames that were likely registered in the early days of the website opening, and see if there are purged accounts still in their friends list. I don't think Dreamwidth has a Purged List like LJ does. It's embarrassing to admit that I spend any time at all thinking about usernames on the internet but it is fun to compile a list so that someone else has the chance to rename to something they really like.
